I'm a Hong Konger

An exploration of my identity ambivalence and my late-life embrace of being a Hong Konger. Also, why the story of Hong Kong is a cautionary tale for America.

This is the audio version of the newsletter I published last week, I’m a Hong Konger. You’ll get to hear me speak a few words in Mandarin and Cantonese in this recording. There are also short clips of Cantopop songs sung by Annabelle Lui and Michael Kwan (“Shedding Tears on the Human Journey”) and Jenny Tseng (“Pearl of the Orient”). They were stars on the Hong Kong music scene in the 70s-80s and beyond.
