I loved learning about your early career as a reporter in Hong Kong and having to learn to be such a quick, on the ground radio reporter working in two languages at once! Very impressive but no doubt very challenging too. It reminds me of my early newspaper reporter career, the Adrenalin of the reporting and urgent deadlines to write fast to make it to my editor ‘before the presses ran,’ (as this was the 80s). I learned a lot from those days and particularly how to analyze situations quickly, write quickly, and make deadlines. Skills that served me well the rest of my career. Can’t wait to read your next installment!

Thank you Amy for your comment! It w a very challenging job indeed. My curiosity and hunger for learning helped soften some of that harshness. But I was quickly worn out. I'm glad we share a common past experience as a news reporter. I know what it means to beat the time "before the presses ran." I worked at a daily newspaper after this radio job, and had the most grueling hours. I would love to hear more about your stories from the days you were a reporter. Please consider that!

Yes, it was an extremely stressful job and I got burned out eventually. It didn't take that long, lol! Glad you enjoyed the photos--a blast from the past.

AMAZING Louisa ❣️ what an incredible challenge and opportunity. Strange for me to read, since your experience closely mirrors my dad’s in WWII as a USC educated Chinese national correspondent in FDRs White House for the China news service. Neither of your roles would be allowed today. We have tragically regressed. 😡

Thanks so much for reading my story, Aimee! Now you have made me super intrigued about your father's work as a correspondent! It really is sad how our freedom has shrunk and civil society has regressed so much. Never would I have dreamt of this day. I guess it turned from an American Dream to an American Nightmare 😰

Thank you so much, Seval! I wasn't sure if I shared this early career history with you. I don't think I've told many people about it, as it made me feel "aged," LOL! But after 30 years in the editorial field, I realized this part of my career was what I'm most proud of.

WOW! I am impressed by your brain being able to zip between two languages in high-intensity work situations. That is a feat.

Thank you, naima! It turned out to be really good training. Little did I know that such a skill would prove useful 27 years later when I was jobless at the beginning of the pandemic, and stumbled upon a Cantonese/English interpreter job? That job reached a whole other level of intensity.
