Hi Louisa, a very fascinating story. Not only you’re a good storyteller but whether you admit it or not, you had a very interesting childhood. I enjoyed reading about it.
Thanks for reading the story, Seval. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it and found my childhood interesting :-) It's a fascinating experience to relive those early years and reconstruct the events. I enjoyed writing it.
I so enjoyed this glimpse of your early years in Hong Kong. You told it so vividly I felt like I was right there with you, fascinated with everything (my younger daughter was also mesmerized by the spinning washing machine when she was very little!) and I really felt for you with the public humiliations. I am glad your teacher turned out to be kind, and that your mother helped you the best she could with the holes in the pages of your textbook. We suffer so as young children--more than we remember! I loved the photos of you, too. So sweet!
Awww, Amy, it's so sweet that your younger daughter was mesmerized by the spinning washing machine just as I was! Yea, life can be so tough for little kids, full of difficulties and challenges! Indeed, I believe our childhood suffering was more intense than we can remember, and the impact would have been stored in our body for life as we didn't yet have words for the big feelings. If we had compassionate adults who witnessed our suffering, the impact wouldn't necessarily translate into trauma. While my mom helped me fix the problem the best she could, and my teacher was not punitive, the sensitive child that I was felt panicked and isolated when the truth was revealed, and then nobody held me or comforted me after the event. I wondered if this contributed to my determination to be extra cautious and perfectionistic in my future endeavors because of a story I made up inside my head?
