Stepping onto British Soil

4. My family reunited at the border of China and Hong Kong, marking the beginning of our adaptation to a foreign land and new cultural norms.

Newly arrived in British Hong Kong, our family of four lived in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in one of these high risers shown in the background of this photo. Apparently, red was an “allowed” color in the free society of Hong Kong, and my mother immediately dressed me with a red coat, reminiscent of Pat Nixon’s infamous red coat.
